In the Summer of 2007, former model and beauty queen Shauna Chin and NFL Raven Daniel Wilcox took a road trip that culminated in a visit to Dan’s alma mater in North Carolina. They stayed in a condo on the mountaintop, and on their first morning, Dan had a special surprise for Shauna.
“I went into the bedroom to find a card and a rose on the bed. The card was beautiful, filled with loving words. On the bottom of the card it read ‘please proceed to the balcony’.
I went to the balcony and found another card and rose. Again it was filled with beautiful words expressing how much he loved me. On the bottom of the card it read ‘proceed to the living room’, and so I did. There was yet another card and rose — beautiful and once again reading ‘please proceed back to the bedroom’.
I went to the bedroom to find another card. I looked up from the card to reach for Dan only to see him standing on the balcony looking picture perfect with the beautiful view behind him. Here he held three roses in his hands. I walked back on to the balcony to hold him with a big hug and kiss.
He gently pushed me away and started to go down on one knee. I had no clue at all that he was about to propose! Dan kept telling me that he had never met a woman like me and that his love for me is far beyond what he has ever known and that he wants to spend the rest of his life loving me… and making me smile. And then I saw the ring! I couldn’t hold back the tears any more and became overwhelmed with emotion. I couldn’t even speak. I was crying so hard he had to ask me if that meant yes…of course I replied with a million yes’s.”
The two were wed this past June at Daniels’ home stadium in Baltimore – a first for the arena. Nods to the heritage of the southern groom and Belizean bride were threaded throughout the event: gospel music filled the stadium as the bride arrived in a horse-drawn carriage and at the reception the guests grooved to the beats of a steel drum band.
