If there was one day of my life that I never thought I would oversleep, it was my Wedding Day. My fiancee and I still had separate apartments-we were planning on moving in together after the honeymoon. We had scheduled everything perfectly. Our apartments were packed, we had chosen a beautiful new place big enough for the two (and eventually, hopefully, three) of us, we would have the ceremony, and then go away for 2 weeks. While we were gone, my Best Man and her Maid of Honor were going to move all of our stuff into the new place, and we could come back and start our new life together. Except for one small problem.
I must have checked the alarm clock a dozen times the night before the ceremony, making sure again and again that it was set for 7:00 a.m.. The wedding was at noon, but I wanted to make sure I would be up well in time. All I had left in my place was my bed and my alarm clock. I had spent the day doing all the last minute details for the move: arranging for my mail to be forwarded, my paper to be delivered to the new apartment, my electricity to be shut off.
Yes, you read that right. I arranged to have my electricity shut off…on the day of the wedding. Somehow, it never occurred to me that I would need the electricity for my alarm clock in the morning! When I woke up, I thought at first I had gotten up before my alarm went off.” I thought. I’d had the jitters all night, and falling asleep hadn’t been easy. Then I thought” Gosh, it’s bright out for 6:00 a.m..” I looked at the clock, just to make sure-and saw that it was off. Then my heart stopped.
Instantly, I knew what had happened.” The electricity!” How could I have been such an idiot? I leapt out of bed, scouring the bedroom for my watch. It was 10:30 a.m.. I had an hour and a half before my wedding, and I hadn’t showered, hadn’t shaved hadn’t t done anything!
The next twenty minutes were a blur. Never in my life have I dressed so quickly. I was so desperate, I called my best man on my cell phone-while I was in the shower! Its was a nightmare. I don’t even know how I made it on time. I must have sped the entire way to the church. The whole way to the church, that song from “My Fair Lady” just kept going through my head-%get me to the church on time” ! I had never imagined it would be possible to be late for a wedding-let alone my own.
By the time I got there, everyone knew what was happening. My Best Man couldn’t keep it a secret. For a second, I thought my funeral and wedding were going to happen on the same day! Somehow my fiancee slipped a note to the Priest, and our vows were changed to include-’-honor, love, and be on time.” Everyone cracked up.
After the ceremony, her bridesmaids surrounded me, showering me with kisses.” If you had stood her up…” they began. Then a photographer yelled for us all to smile. We all turned around, and I smiled a huge, relieved grin. Saved by the bell, I thought.
