John Muir, the great preservationist and founder of the Sierra Club, often likened his experiences in the California mountains to being in church. Having a ceremony outside, surrounded by the beauty of the world on your wedding day, can be an amazing experience and picking a beautiful setting significantly decreases the need for additional embellishment.

A few popular options include beaches, forests, lakefronts, deserts, and meadows. My husband and I were lucky enough to have our ceremony on the hilltop overlooking the Hudson Valley on a picture-perfect day in October, and it was unforgettable.

But planning a wedding outside is a risky prospect. If you choose a natural location, it is absolutely essential that you have a rain plan. You should also do your best to anticipate and take care of your guests’ needs ahead of time. Having your reception outside can also pose additional logistical problems. You may need to rent a tent, lighting, tables, chairs, linens, port-a-potties, and space heaters and may also need to get a special permit to use a natural space.

Be sure to look into rentals early and to check the rules of the area as far in advance as possible.
